About Us

Originally the ‘Ancienne Ecole’ of Castelnau de Montmiral, the atelier occupies a dominant position within the heart of the hilltop village. The building operated as a school for approximately 100 years and closed in the latter part of the 20th century to become a residential property. We brought it back to its former glory as an art school in 2005 by painstakingly and sympathetically preserving and restoring the building. The restoration project took eighteen months of hard work between the two of us – the original terracotta tiles in all the bedrooms took three months alone to restore and treat with traditional linseed oil protection.

Resident tutors and owners Mick and Bunny Newth are both practising fine artists who have exhibited widely in the UK. They have undertaken many public commissions both in the UK and abroad. In the 1990′s they ran a successful textile printing business producing fabrics for Liberty’s of London and designed and created painted and printed wallhangings for large spaces and the corporate sector – clients included Unilever, BAA and Quest International.

They are both fully qualified tutors, and have over 25 years of professional experience teaching on art courses within Secondary, Further and Higher Education. As well as their teaching at Atelier Montmiral, they now also run art courses in drawing, painting and printmaking in Kent for Kent Adult Education during the winter months from February through to April. For more details, please see our Courses page.

Mick specialises in printmaking, and Bunny in painting. Together they offer a wealth of creative approaches to provide the perfect art holiday within a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
